Garrett Hull, a plainclothes policeman, was shot in the head while he was trying to arrest suspects in an armed robbery and that he is in critical condition, said Joel Fitzgerald, Chief of Police Fort Worth.
The shooting took place shortly after 12:30 pm at the Los Vaqueros bar and restaurant, in the 400 block of W. Biddison Street, police said.
The undercover agents followed what Fitzgerald called a "flight team".
Police said three suspects in a series of robberies in the area had been deployed by the time the suspects tried to steal the restaurant.
In a clash, the police opened fire and killed one of the three robbery suspects, he said. The suspects have not been identified by the police. No other officer was injured, the police said.
Police believe the suspect who was killed in the shooting was the man who shot Hull, police spokesman Bradley Perez said.
"Unfortunately, we are once again feeding the collective pain we have experienced in the North Texas area in recent years," Fitzgerald said at a news conference at around 4:30 am.
A representative of the Fort Worth Police Association said that Mr. Hull "was fighting for his life. And he is a hero. "
Fitzgerald said three people were shot while committing robberies.
As an officer in uniform and Hull went to make an arrest, one of the suspects of the flight out of Los Vaqueros opened fire, said Fitzgerald, who shot the officer at the head.
The agents fired back and killed a suspect, he said.
His colleagues helped Hull and he was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital, Fitzgerald said.
The other two suspects were apprehended, the police said.
The three suspects were being sought in a series of increasingly violent robberies targeting Hispanic settlements, the police said.
"These people were stalked and were suspected of being involved in many similar robberies, not just in Fort Worth, but probably in other local jurisdictions," Perez said.
