Predicting who will bring Emmys home will never be as popular as playing football or diving into the Oscar pool, but this year's ceremonies should be of interest to anyone with an occasional gaming habit. With the former winners "Game of Thrones" and "The Handmaid's Tale" arguing for the first time and "Veep" in hiatus, many races are more difficult than ever to handicap. Here are seven things to watch for:
Dramatic series
nominees: "The Americans", "The Crown", "Game of Thrones", "The Handmaid's Tale", "Stranger Things", "This Is Us", "Westworld".
During the last decade, only the "homeland" triumphed without returning to the circle of winners. This model is a good omen for the 2017 champion "Handmaid", although she did not have to compete last year against the double champion "GOT".
Comic series
nominees: "Atlanta", "Barry", "Black-ish", "Curb Your Enthusiasm", "GLOW", "The wonderful Ms. Maisel", "Silicon Valley", "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt".
"Atlanta" deserves recognition – as the best television drama. Although the series is not in the right category, Donald Glover and the company will be in the lead, even if a victory of "Maisel" or "GLOW" would be more appropriate.
Actress, comedy
nominees: Pamela Adlon, "Better Things"; Rachel Brosnahan, "Maisel"; Allison Janney, "mom"; Issa Rae, "Insecure"; Tracee Ellis Ross, "Black-ish"; Lily Tomlin, "Grace and Frankie".
While Veep's Julia-Louis Dreyfus ended the season, voters have the chance to honor their other favorite, Janney. Or maybe they will go for Ross, who fell three years in a row. But Brosnahan's quick and furious performance was too rich to be ignored.
Actor, drama
nominees: Jason Bateman, "Ozark"; Sterling K. Brown, "This Is Us"; Ed Harris, "Westworld"; Matthew Rhys, "The Americans"; Jeffrey Wright, "Westworld"; Milo Ventimiglia, "This Is Us"
If anyone deserves an Emmy for "Americans", it's Keri Russell, but she has to face long odds against Elisabeth Moss and Sandra Oh ("Killing Eve"). The best chances of the show in his last season are with Rhys.
Support Actor, comedy
nominees: Louie Anderson, "Baskets"; Alec Baldwin, "SNL"; Tituss Burgess, "Kimmy"; Brian Tyree Henry, "Atlanta"; Tony Shalhoub, "Maisel"; Kenan Thompson, "SNL"; Henry Winkler, "Barry".
Anderson and Baldwin have already won in this category and one or the other could do it again. But the Fonz has never won an Emmy – and it has never been cooler.
Supporting actress, comedy
nominees: Zazie Beetz, "Atlanta"; Alex Borstein, "Maisel"; Aidy Bryant, "SNL"; Betty Gilpin, "GLOW"; Leslie Jones, "SNL"; Kate McKinnon, "SNL"; Laurie Metcalf, "Roseanne"; Megan Mullally, "Will and Grace".
McKinnon could become the fifth person to win in this category three times in a row, joining Doris Roberts, Rhea Perlman, Valerie Harper – and Metcalf. Borstein will probably get in his way.
Reality competition program
nominees: "The Amazing Race", "American Ninja Warrior", "Project Runway", "RuPaul's Drag Race", "Top Chef", "The Voice".
Only three shows – "Voice", "Amazing" and "Chef" – have won this award since the category was created in 2003. Do not be surprised if RuPaul blocks the band.
