The Taco Bell menu is easy enough to understand in all languages. In fact, half of the words are just invented words – CrunchWrap Supremes and "nacho fries" are not exactly ancestral Mexican dishes. You can also order food by simply shouting a combo number such as "T3" for a three-tacos meal.
But when a black couple tried to order in English and Spanish at Hialeah Taco Bell this week, the employees were filmed telling them to get lost before threatening to call the cops on them. In a viral Facebook video posted online Wednesday, Alexandria Montgomery, a resident of Miami, says her employee at Hialeah Taco Bell refused to accept her order in English and said she was calling the cops to hunt her. (It is unclear whether the forces of order have arrived.) Montgomery, who is black, says that the incident was clearly racist in nature.
"Taco Bell in Hialeah racist like f," she wrote Wednesday. "This lady understood what I said but did not want to take my order by talking about her
Montgomery, who did not immediately respond to a message from New times, Told El Nuevo Herald earlier today that the incident occurred at the Taco Bell store at 785 E. Ninth St. in Hialeah. A representative of Taco Bell said El Nuevo that the incident "does not meet the expectations of our customer service", adding that the chain has "worked quickly to resolve the problem with the customer to ensure that it does not happen again".
Montgomery wrote on Facebook that the involved worker, who claimed to be calling "Luisa", was fired.
In the clip, it seems certain that "Luisa" understood Montgomery's English – but she continued to reply in Spanish to Montgomery's statements.
"But are you talking about something, though?" Montgomery says in the video before "Luisa" slams the window at the wheel. The worker then threatens to call the police.
"It's Hialeah," replies the worker at one point.
In the most glaring moment of the video, a man in the car even offers to order a combo in Spanish.
"Uno, back, very,
This is not even the only claim of absurd racism in South Florida in the news of today. the Miami Herald also reported this afternoon that the office of the sheriff of Broward has dispatched a police helicopter to catch an alleged "house intruder" who turned out to be a black man who knocked on doors while campaigning for office.
Another highlight day for race relations in the United States.
