Michigan Renaissance Festival visitors are welcome to get vaccinated against hepatitis after a visitor has tested positive for the disease.
According to a statement released by the Lenawee County Health Department, those who attended the event in Holly, Michigan, from September 1 to 3, are encouraged to get vaccinated by Monday so to be able to detect the appearance of symptoms.
Residents of Lenawee County seeking information on vaccination should contact the County Health Department at 517-264-5223. Others may call the State Department of Health and Social Services at 517-335-8165 or visit michigan.gov/hepaoutbreak.
Hepatitis A is a liver disease that can be transmitted through the ingestion of food or water contaminated with feces or through sexual contact. Symptoms include fatigue, fever, nausea and vomiting, jaundice, dark urine, pale stools, and joint pain.
The initial advice came from the Oakland County Health Department in Michigan, where the festival was held.
Southeastern Michigan is experiencing a multi-month Hepatitis A epidemic that has resulted in 886 patients and 28 deaths. Ohio recently declared a state-wide epidemic.
To reduce the risk of spreading the disease, health officials recommend washing hands frequently, cleaning and disinfecting household surfaces, and avoiding preparing foods with symptoms.
