A member of a US Coast Guard team that reacted to tropical storm Florence in South Carolina seemed to make a white-handed gesture in the background while a captain was interviewed Friday by MSNBC.
The man has since been removed from Florence's intervention operations and the investigation is ongoing, said Lieutenant J. B. Zorn.
"Whatever that symbol is, it does not reflect the Coast Guard and our core values," Zorn said. "It will not be tolerated."
Coast Guard officials did not identify the man and refused to discuss possible disciplinary measures.
He broadcast the signal as Captain John Reed, commander of Florence's intervention efforts in Charleston, South Carolina, explained a new tact as the storm changed direction. A man in a red shirt was seen signaling the hand against the right side of his face as he sat at a table in the background.
The Coast Guard has been at the forefront of rescue operations in the Carolinas, where at least five people have died since the storm hit the coast Friday morning.
"We will not let anyone injure the good work of the Coast Guard in the area," Zorn said. "We will stay focused."
