SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – A series of 11 defeats have hit the San Francisco Giants, who have had opportunities in many of these games and found themselves on the wrong side.
Chris Stratton's first shutout could not have come at a more opportune time to get his club out of a funk of weeks.
Stratton threw a 1-2 finish, Austin Slater backed it with a two-point single, and San Francisco got his longest skid since 1951 by defeating the Colorado Rockies 2-0 on Friday night.
"We are trying to win. We do not give up, "Stratton said. "It's a bit difficult at the moment, but we're doing everything we can to win games."
The Rockies, leaders of NL's West Division, saw their division lead reduced to half a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who won in St. Louis. Colorado has had a seven-game winning streak against San Francisco.
Stratton (10-9) eliminated seven players and made two shots to complete the two-hour, 20-minute game. It allowed a single baserunner to reach second place with Trevor Story in the second.
"We could not seem quite up to it," said Rockies manager Bud Black.
The right-hander has a high career in wins and has become the first thrower of the Giants with double-digit wins since 2016 when Johnny Cueto, Madison Bumgarner and Jeff Samardzija arrived. These three star throwers have been injured this season.
Stratton, who worked with former Giants right winger Ryan Vogelsong when he was sent back to Triple-A Sacramento and who will be running for the 2019 rotation, has retired nine straight and his last 12 hitters. He launched the first shutout of the Giants since Samardzija on August 28, 2017 against San Diego.
By finishing the longest skid in Bruce Bochy's managerial career – he had a nine-game losing streak with San Diego in 2003 – the Giants won their first win this month.
"It's great to get out of schneid. I'm not going to lie, it tires you, "said Bochy. "It was one of those series, it's hard to believe we were in the sequence, to be honest, because we were in a lot of games."
The Giants finished their worst game without a win since coming to San Francisco. They avoided what would have been the fourth set of 12 or more defeats in the history of the franchise since 1883. They did it in 1944 with a skid of 13 games and also in 1902 and 1900 – all playing in New York.
Tyler Anderson (6-9) has not won in 12 starts since winning the Giants on July 4th.
Anderson's wild run in the second allowed the runners to finish second and third ahead of Slater's single. Anderson then hit the side for the next round.
"If I do not throw a wild throw, we could still play," he said. "I could throw a double ball and we could still go. But overall, in general, better.
He allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings, eliminated six shots and failed to beat a batter.
"Tyler shot the ball better," said Black. "I think you saw the command."
Giants are moving
San Francisco has sacked Carl Kochan, the seventh-year strength and conditioning coach, in what could be the start of a series of moves as another lost season comes to an end.

Giants: 1B Brandon Belt came out on top in the seventh and said afterwards that his right knee stretched "had just gotten worse". He said that he might need more days off and Bochy agreed that this might be necessary. "I'm worried there," said Bochy. "We have to be smart about it and see where it is.
