Peter Donat, who played Agent Fox Mulder's father on "The X-Files" and starred in two films by Francis Ford Coppola, died Monday at his home in Point Reyes, California.

His wife, Maria, told the New York Times that the complications were related to diabetes.

Donat, perhaps most recognizable for his recurring role as "X-Files", was also a frequent theater actor, playing over the years Cyrano de Bergerac, Prospero, Shylock, King Lear and Hadrian VII.

He has also appeared in television series such as "The F.B.I.", "Hawaii Five-O", "Mannix", "McMillan & Wife", "Hill Street Blues" and "Murder, She Wrote".

Francis Ford Coppola interpreted Donat as a lawyer in "The Godfather Part II" after being considered for Tom Hagen's role in "The Godather", a part that was eventually awarded to Robert Duvall. Donat also played Otto Kerner in "Tucker: The Man and His Dream" of Coppola in 1980.

The actor from Canada, originally from Kentville, Nova Scotia, was seduced by his uncle's career, "Goodbye, Mr. Chips," Robert Donat. His career began on stage and he played a few roles on television before making his Broadway debut in 1957 in "The First Gentleman".

In addition to his wife, Donat is survived by his sons, Caleb, Christopher and Lucas; two step-daughters, Barbara Park Shapiro and Marina Park Sutton; a step-son, Malcolm Park; 11 grandchildren; and his brother Richard, who is also an actor.
