WILMINGTON, N.-C. (WNCN) – Wilmington police said they were aware of looting at a Family Dollar store in the city on Saturday afternoon.
A reporter from WFMY-TV captured a video of several people running around the store, whose sliding door was opened after Hurricane Florence.
"Hurricane Florence causes chaos in this city" Hannah Brewer from WFMY wrote on Twitter.
The incident was captured on video around 4:20 pm. WECT reported that several people were wearing masks.
Some people were carrying large quantities of items out of the store while at least one man had a cart with objects. A housing complex is located right in front of the store.
"We are aware of the looting at the Family Dollar Store on 13th & Greenfield, unfortunately management has asked not to intervene at this time," tweeted the Wilmington police.
Later on Saturday night, the police announced that she had decided to make arrests anyway and that five people had been arrested. The names and charges were not available Sunday night.
Earlier Saturday, at a service station in Wilmington, a heated debate erupted as people lined up, according to a report by WFMY-TV reporter Luke Lyddon.
Several people with several portable fuel tanks were lined up at the service station at approximately 1:30 pm
Lyddon was parked at the station and said that at least one man had a gun while he was talking to another man.
"Tensions to get gasoline here in Wilmington when a man pulled out a gun! Fortunately, no one was hurt," said Lyddon.
People at the station jumped online, which triggered arguments, said Lyddon. No one has been charged or arrested.
