Ikea will aim to achieve zero-emission home deliveries in five cities by 2020, the company announced this week.
Deliveries to customers in Amsterdam, Los Angeles, New York, Paris and Shanghai will be mainly by electric vehicle to meet the environmental objectives of zero emissions.
"For us, it is crucial to grow our business in a sustainable way – which is why we are accelerating the transition to power grids in five urban areas," Jesper Brodin, CEO of Ikea Group, said in a statement. "By 2020, all our home deliveries in the centers of Amsterdam, Los Angeles, New York, Paris and Shanghai will be done by EV or by other no-emission solutions. "
The Swedish furniture company joined the EV100 initiative of the Climate Group in 2017, promising to reach this goal by 2020, to provide access to the charging stations of electric vehicles by 2020 to all home deliveries by 2025 half of the emissions of employees and customers of Ikea by 2030.
HP, Unilever and PG & E are also part of this group.
Among the EV100 members, Ikea is in the lead. In June, the company committed to removing all single-use plastics, such as plastic straws and Swedish meatball plates, from its stores by 2020.
"Moving to EVs for home delivery at this rate, IKEA is a good example of clean city center transportation, where zero-emission areas will one day become the norm," said Helen Clarkson, CEO of Climate Group. . "They enable their customers to play a key role in accelerating the global deployment of electric vehicles."
