One of the biggest criticisms against Marvel's Spider-Man These are stealthy sections where you play Mary Jane and Miles Morales.
Juxtaposed with the thrilling action of swinging around Manhattan, kicking demons, and even Spidey's own stealthy sections, many complained of the parts you play as Mary Jane, in short, boring and without inspiration. Fortunately, for these people, sections are not very common
That said, what is the reason Insomniac Games added them? Well, the reasoning is threefold.
Addressing Kinda Funny Games, Creative Director, Bryan Intihar, revealed that the first reason was that they simply did not want the character to be a "damsel in distress", as in the previous incarnations.
"It was really very important for us to make MJ a capable contributor to history … I did not want to make the damsel in distress," Intihar said.
Intihar went on, noting that it was just natural to portray MJ in this way, in modern times. In addition, by making it playable, players would have a better idea of his bow than if it had just emerged in cut scenes.
The second reason is stimulation.
"If we play constantly as Spider-Man, then it's constantly at 10, and that can sometimes become exhausting," said the director. "So, we thought it would be a good change of pace."
Finally, the third reason was that the team thought it would be cool to play as a non-superhero in a world full of superheroes and villains.
"We thought it would be interesting to see what it is like to be in a world of superheroes, but not super-powers," Intihar said. "And it was just the choice we had made."
Intihar continued, reflecting that he knew everyone did not like the decision, but many others did. Personally, I was not a big fan of these sections, but I agree with Intihar's three-pronged reasoning for having them. I would simply like these sections to have been more persuasive, engaging and varied, rather than repetitive and fueled by trial and error.
