Fresh herbs

The addition of fresh herbs like coriander brings a particular flavor to many classic versions of the dip. Fresh chives and green onions are also a good alternative to onions.

Heat

Jalapenos is a way to add punch to your guacamole, and as Rick Bayless suggests, you'll want to include the seeds to bring warmth.

Fruit

This may seem unconventional, but adding fruit to your guacamole will give it a nice sweetness that acts as a contrast with the salty avocado. Pomegranate seeds, pineapple, mango and grapefruit are all good options.

Sour cream

If you want to give your guac a little creamy, you can try adding just a little sour cream or Greek yogurt.

Honey

You do not need to add fruit to give your guacamole a sweet side. Sleeping honey in your dip is a good way to balance the spices you include.

Tequila

You do not need to reserve any tequila for the margarita you drink with your guacamole. Pour a splash in the dip for a fun touch. (Just make sure to keep this one away from children.)

Corn

Corn is the main ingredient in some salsa dips, so why not add it to your guacamole? Grilling corn adds an even more delicious flavor.

Cheese is good matched with most things, and this includes guacamole. Make a queso oaxaca or a Monterey Jack and pour it on your guacamole makes it an excellent appetizer.
