Negotiating Alex Smith after earning the best score of 104.7 in 2017 as the league's best career passer and league leader was a bold move. The Kansas City Chiefs were hoping that first-round pick Patrick Mahomes would be ready to take the reins in his second NFL season and lead the team to bigger, better things than Smith.
Until now, the risk is brilliant.
Two games in the Mahomes era, the quarter has 10 touchdowns without interceptions. This is the most that any smuggler has ever had in the first two weeks of a season. His six touchdowns against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2 tied the record of a Chiefs game.
The Chiefs are 2-0 now and Mahomes is the most exciting NFL player to watch. Here are four reasons why it's best to listen when Mahomes is on TV:
Mahomes is at the best start for any quarter
Drew Brees, Peyton Manning and Charley Johnson all had seasons with nine touchdowns in the first two weeks. That was the record until the arrival of Mahomes, but only Manning did so without interception.
In 2013, Manning started his year with seven touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 1 and two unselected touchdowns in Week 2.
Although Mahomes failed to reach seven touchdowns Sunday, his consecutive games with at least four touchdowns showed it was not a week-long blast. It also binds another record. This is the 16th time a quarter has had at least four touchdowns and no interceptions in consecutive games. No smuggler has managed to make three games in a row.
The San Francisco 49ers will have to find ways to slow it down in the third week.
It's just beginning
On Monday, Mahomes is 23 years old.
Although he made a start in 2017, when the Chiefs had already secured a playoff spot and chose to rest in Week 17, this is essentially his first NFL action.
The previous record of touchdowns in the first three career games of a player belonged to Marcus Mariota and Mark Rypien, who each had eight. Mahomes also broke that record despite not having a touchdown on his first career start last year. The record across two games is Mariota with six.
It is obviously unrealistic to expect Mahomes to score an average of five touchdowns per game during a match, but there is no reason to believe that he will not fire the league for a very long time.
Mahomes has a cannon
When the Chiefs took the quarterback of Texas Tech, his ridiculous arm was already the subject of legends. During his protest day, he casually unleashed an 80 yard bomb in the end zone to finish his pitch in front of the coaches and scouts.
His longest strike of the day against the Steelers was a 29-yard pass at Tyreek Hill that did not show the full force of his arm.
But his huge arm is evident even in his intermediate passes. Like his 19-yard touchdown at Travis Kelce early in the game that was reported before the Steelers' defense knew what hit them.
We still have not seen Mahomes throw an 80 meter. At least not in a regular season game. He has already shown us what he can do in the pre-season.
Good luck preparing a defense to stop this when the leaders have deep threats like Hill and Sammy Watkins.
Chiefs need Mahomes to score a lot
The defense of Kansas City is quite difficult. He gave away more than 500 yards of offense to the Chargers in the first week and awarded 37 points to the Steelers in Week 2.
The only reason the Chiefs are 2-0 is that the offensive is winning shootings, a Texas Tech style.
Do not expect Mahomes' figures to slow down, because the leaders can not pay them. They will need him to continue shooting and fighting each week to support a defense that does not do the job.
The return of Eric Berry from a heel injury will eventually help, but it's the Mahomes show in Kansas City and it's an explosion.
