Minnesota officials said a couple had dropped his 5-year-old boy in the woods as a form of punishment for wetting his pants, reported the Star Tribune.
The report said the boy was found crying and wet by the rain on the side of a road in Nicollet County. Later, he told police he was "bad" and did not know where his parents were.
Gregory A Wilson, 32, and Lynda R. Michel, 42, were charged on Friday. The boy is Wilson's biological son, according to the report. Wilson was the victim of neglect of a child and malicious punishment of a child, which are considered serious offenses. Michel was struck with gross negligence.
The couple was looking for the boy but would not have reported it.
The newspaper, citing the charges, said the couple had stated that the boy had urinated on himself and that they had driven to an isolated place and asked him to get out of the vehicle. They reportedly said that they had left a short distance and that they had left on their return. They reportedly stated that they were looking for about 15 minutes.
A couple living on the hill would have heard cries in a search saying "you are not in trouble".
According to the investigators, officers found "multiple black and blue and red blues" on the boy's back, buttocks, and hips, indicating that they had been caused over time, and Wilson told investigators that he gave the boy a steady hand. Wilson also faces charges of gross mischief, malicious punishment of a child and domestic assault.
The child has been placed in pre-trial detention and is currently in foster care, according to court documents that do not mention any lawyer for Michel or Wilson.
