Dak leads, Cowboys D dominate in 20-13 win over Giants

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – Dak Prescott has accepted the challenge.

The Dallas quarterback threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Tavon Austin in the third game and the Cowboys sacked Eli Manning six times in a 20-13 win against the New York Giants on Sunday night.

Dallas's defense was strong again, as in a first loss to Carolina, while the Cowboys (1-1) avoided the first 0-2 start in seven seasons with coach Jason Garrett.

Manning and the Giants started 0-2 for the fifth time in the last six seasons.

After declaring "challenge accepted" during the week to the security of the giants, Landon Collins' suggestion that New York would have a better chance by forcing Prescott to throw, the NFL's 2016 offensive rookie beat the half corner Janoris Jenkins. The fast receiver went back to his right before crossing the goal line at an angle.

"We have certainly heard that," said Prescott. "I said that the challenge was accepted, I said I accepted it. But I can tell you that I was not the only one to accept this challenge. This team accepted it. This offense accepted him. We wanted to go out and show you guys.

Dallas midfielder Ezekiel Elliott surpassed Saquon Barkley in the first pro game between the university's former rivals and the NFL draft picks. Elliott, who starred at Ohio State, earned 78 yards per touchdown. Barkley, of Penn State, was only 28 years old.

Even Prescott moved ahead of Barkley, finishing with a 45-yard high on the ground scoring 160.

Brett Maher scored the first two goals of his career in the NFL, including a 29-yard dash after Damien Wilson forced a fumble on a Manning bag and Taco Charlton recovered.

The Cowboys shared the richness of the bags, with six different players recording one bag each: linebacker Wilson, safety Kavon Frazier and defensive linemen Charlton, DeMarcus Lawrence, Antwaun Woods and Tyrone Crawford.

"He has been in this league for a long time, he can read the defenses, and shaking him up a bit is always good," Crawford said.

The Giants had questions with the offensive front, and they will only grow after Manning has completed twice the biggest of his career. New York also lost center Jon Halapio, who was sent off with an air throw to his right leg in the third quarter.

Manning converted a pair of quarterfinals into stealth, but the bags prevented the Giants from converting them into points. He was even hammered when he was not behind the line of scrimmage – on a linebacker Jaylon Smith's throw on a 1-yard gain before New York's first points on Aldrick Rosas's 28-yard throw at the end third quarter.

"Eli is confident," said coach Pat Shurmur. "He's a pro and he struggled all through the game and I thought he did a good job. I feel confidence, yes.

Prescott fooled New York's defense several times with false transfers to Elliott on goalies in the end. The longest was a quarter in Dallas' second possession, leading Maher's first goal on the 37-yard NFL field.

For the second week in a row, the Giants had no touchdown until the fourth quarter. New York made it interesting that Michael Thomas kicked after Manning had an 18-yard pass to Evan Engram with 1:27 left.

The Giants settled for 38 yards from Rosas in a touchdown with 11 seconds left, but the next kick was overtaken.

Manning finished 33 of 44 for 279 yards. Austin caught two passes and led Dallas with 79 yards of winnings.

AIR TIME

Although Barkley was stifled in the racing game, he led everyone with 14 catches for 80 yards. Odell Beckham Jr. made four catches for 51 yards. Engram added seven for 67. "They just did a good job, they just got some pressure and they did not have a lot of time to put the ball on the field," Manning said.

ALWAYS DIFFICULT

The quick hit in the passing game did not make life very easy for Elliott. He struggled to find a lot of room outside a 19 meter on the second drive. The touchdown was a 6-yard run for a 20-3 lead with 5:45 to play.

START DELAYED

Dallas tight end Rico Gathers was active for the first time in his third season in the NFL. The former Baylor basketball player was open in the end zone in one game, but Prescott overturned it when the pressure came. Gathers was targeted twice without catching.

INJURY

Giants: Kaelin Clay, Punt's draft, injured his ankle in the second quarter and did not return. He had another adventure one week after his loss cost the Giants a chance to meet Jacksonville. He was undecided on an ankle, which bounced in front of him and directly against him. He's hanging on the ball. … Eli Apple was sidelined in the second half due to an injury to the groin.

Cowboys: LB Sean Lee was held late with a hamstring injury, but coach Jason Garrett said he could have come back and should be fine next week.

FOLLOWING

Giants: Another Texas trip to Houston.

Cowboys: In Seattle.
