Attack of a grizzly bear: Officials kill bears suspected of killing a hunting guide, injuring a customer in Wyoming

JACKSON, Wyo. – Wyoming officials trapped and killed two grizzlies who they said killed a hunting outfitter and injured his client. Brad Hovinga, regional supervisor for the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, said Sunday that the dead grizzlies matched the description of those who killed Mark Uptain, a 37-year-old man.

The body of Uptain was found Saturday in the Teton Desert east of Grand Teton National Park. Corey Chubon of Florida was injured in the leg, chest and arm, but was released from hospital.

"I'm just blessed and extremely grateful to have managed to get out of this situation," Chubon told CBS Orlando's affiliate, WKMG.

According to his father, Chubon was caught by the ankles and thrown from his horse. Chubon managed to point a gun to the bear, but the animal dropped it from his hands. Uptain was caught by the same bear and dragged into the woods, the station reported.

Hovinga suspects that the bears were a sow and her cub. He tells the Jackson Hole News & Guide that bears do not behave normally.

The men had the intention of recovering a Chubon momentum that they had killed. The bears apparently did not feed on the moose or kept the meat.

The attack is still under investigation.

A GoFundMe account has been created for the Uptain family.

In May, Wyoming approved his first hunt Grizzlies since the 1970s, but three months later, a US judge issued a temporary restraint order on hunting.
