Tornadoes across the Richmond area caused chaos on Monday when the students were staying there, although they should have gone home and the roads were closed at Chesterfield.
Several tornadoes were seen, beginning in Chesterfield County before heading north to Richmond and the surrounding counties.
Tornadoes forced county officials to close several roads. These roads have been closed:
- Route 360 to Route 288
- Route 360 to Speeks Street
- Highway 288 South to Hull Street
- Beach Road in Riverway
- Songs of Otterdale
Nearly 7,000 Dominion Energy customers in the Richmond area are without power, most in Chesterfield County.
According to the Dominion Clipping Center at 5:10 pm, there are 6,800 customers without electricity in the Richmond and Tri-Cities areas: 4,077 in Chesterfield, 979 in Henrico, 1,483 in Richmond and 241 in Goochland.
Schools throughout the area where students were still in the building kept them there and some school buses, which were on their normal afternoon route, returned to school or school. Other safe structures, like churches.
The four school districts in the region canceled activities after school earlier on Monday, as weather officials warned of potential tornadoes caused by the remains of Hurricane Florence.

The Richmond Public Schools continue to welcome elementary students to their schools.
The district has completed its high school bus lines and is "underway" with its college routes.
"If necessary, these buses will stop and shelter at school," Superintendent Jason Kamras said in a tweet.
He added: "All buses that have not left are withheld until the tornado warning is raised.Thank you for your understanding and your patience."
The Richmond School Board meeting scheduled for Monday night has also been canceled.
Chesterfield County Public Schools welcomed students before dropping colleges, except at Tomahawk Creek at approximately 4:45 pm Bon Air Elementary Schools, Crenshaw, Bensley, Clover Hill, Wells and Jacobs Road were also released.
James River and Midlothian high school students are back in a shelter.
Schoolchildren in Hanover are always protected.
The schools of Henrico are also hosted in place mode.
"When the tornado warning is raised, school buses will take the students home, starting with the college routes that have been delayed," said the school division at 5 pm. "This will be followed by high school routes."
University of the Commonwealth of Virginia
VCU asked the students to "look for shelter in the interior".
Reynolds Community College
Reynolds canceled all classes and evening activities.
UR asked the students to go to the shelter. The university has suspended all courses, activities and events.
Virginia Union University
VUU canceled all evening classes.
