the 70th Emmy Awards air on Monday, September 17, and Jen Chaney, critic of Vulture TV and New York TV magazine critic Matt Zoller Seitz breaks down the main categories with Emmy predictions for variety series, limited series, comedy, and drama. What will win? What should really win? That's what we are here to determine.
• The iron Throne (HBO)
• Stranger things (Netflix)
• Americans (FX)
• The crown (Netflix)
• The servant's tale (Hulu)
• This is us (NBC)
• Westworld (HBO)
L & # 39; Emmy should go to … Americans. For the final alone, but really for everything. –MZS
The Emmy will of … Probably A servant's tale – or maybe The crownbecause he's very English, and a lot of Emmy voters would prefer everything on Netflix because it's easier like that. –MZS
• Atlanta (FX)
• Barry (HBO)
• Black-ish (ABC)
• LIGHT (Netflix)
• The wonderful Mrs. Maisel (Amazon)
• Silicon Valley (HBO)
• Kimmy Schmidt unbreakable (Netflix)
L & # 39; Emmy will go to … The wonderful Mrs Maisel. Or Ms. Maisel or Atlanta is a traditional family sitcom, but the first is the most obvious of the two. And in this category, it is important. -JC
L & # 39; Emmy should go to … Atlanta. Ms. Maisel is charming and daring, but Atlanta do things that challenge the basic frames of television. Even if it's not funny at all times, it's still pretty funny. For example, the hilarious episode "Barbershop", which presents the most absurd waiting time in the history of follicle maintenance. I'm not sure Emmy voters choose him here. I would be happy to be proven wrong. -JC
• the alienist (DTT)
• The assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (FX)
• Engineering: Picasso (National Geographic)
• unholy (Netflix)
• Patrick Melrose (Show time)
L & # 39; Emmy will go to … Patrick Melrose. Go then. It is as if it were designed so that Anglophiles who populate the Academy cry a tear of joy on a stiff upper lip. –MZS
L & # 39; Emmy should go to … The assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. I have been watching television for over 20 years and have never seen anything like it, thematically, stylistically or structurally. Only a producer as powerful and bold as Ryan Murphy could realize it. Yes, of course, it's ostensibly monumental and cold, but the big pyramids too. And it's a perfect, albeit alarming, companion to Murphy's other 2018 production, pose, which takes place at the same time. –MZS
• The daily show with Trevor Noah (Central Comedy)
• Full Front with Samantha Bee (TBS)
• Jimmy Kimmel Live! (ABC)
• Last week with John Oliver (HBO)
• The end of the late show with James Corden (CBS)
• The late show with Stephen Colbert (CBS)
L & # 39; Emmy will go to … Last week with John Oliver, for the reasons I have just suggested. What Jon Stewart was in the era of George W. Bush, Oliver is in the Trump era, and I think he and his show will continue to get Emmys in the same way The daily show once done. That said, if Bee or Kimmel is upset, I will not be totally shocked. -JC
L & # 39; Emmy should go to … Last week with John Oliver. I admire Kimmel for the dedication and political passion that he has brought to his program. (Even though I love Colbert, I still can not understand that it would be so much more interesting at this political moment if he still did it) The Colbert show.) I like Bee a lot too, but Oliver tends to be the first person to hear when something particularly crazy happens in the political realm. Which is, you know, a lot. He is also the host who surprises me the most with his inventive jargon at the institution. In my mind, Oliver and his team won the Emmy as soon as they released a children's book about Mike Pence's homosexual rabbit, Marlon Bundo, before selling Pence's book on his pet rabbit, Marlon Bundo. -JC
• At home with Amy Sedaris (TruTV)
• Drunk history (Central Comedy)
• I love you, America with Sarah Silverman (Hulu)
• Portlandia (IFC)
• Saturday Night Live (NBC)
• Tracey Ullman's show (HBO)
L & # 39; Emmy will go to … Saturday Night Live. It's worth noting that the Emmys are airing on NBC this year, Lorne Michaels is producing the ceremony and Weekend Update co-organizers Michael Che and Colin Jost are hosting the ceremony. That does not mean that this victory is a done deal, but it's so a case made -JC
L & # 39; Emmy should go to … At home with Amy Sedaris. Honestly, I'd love it to happen because Sedaris is a manic national treasure that is underestimated by the masses. His series is also singularly strange – no one else could make this show, but Sedaris – that stands out. His acceptance speech would undoubtedly be memorable and strange. But alas, Sedaris can not possibly beat SNLBy the way, it would be wise to ask Sedaris to host one of these days. -JC
• Jason Bateman, Ozark
• Matthew Rhys, Americans
• Milo Ventimiglia, That's us
• Sterling K. Brown, That's us
• Jeffrey Wright, Westworld
• Ed Harris, Westworld
L & # 39; Emmy should go to … Matthew Rhys. For the parking-garage scene in the only final – what acrobatic demonstration of change of tone!
L & # 39; Emmy will go to … Probably Sterling K. Brownbecause he's great, he has royalty, because he won last year and the character is alluring.
• Anthony Anderson, Blackish
• Ted Danson, The right place
• Larry David, Calm your enthusiasm
• Donald Glover, Atlanta
• Bill Hader, Barry
• William H. Macy, Shameless
The Emmy will go to … Donald Glover. His performance is more than deserving and, as I have said many times, Emmy voters tend to repeat themselves. Jim Parsons won for The Big Bang Theory three times this decade, and Jeffrey Tambor has won two consecutive years for Transparent before Glover came out winner last year. A second consecutive victory for the star of Atlanta seems the most likely result on Emmy Night.
The Emmy should go to … Bill Hader. As great as Glover – not to mention Danson – I still think that Hader's performance was the death blow of the year.
• Antonio Banderas, Engineering: Picasso
• Darren Criss, The assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
• Benedict Cumberbatch, Patrick Melrose
• Jeff Daniels, The imminent tower
• John legend, Jesus Christ Superstar
• Jesse Plemons, Black mirror, "USS Callister"
L & # 39; Emmy will go to … John Legend. Many people will vote for him just to see the inevitable viral video of him doing another batch of pancakes.
The Emmy should go to … John Legend. Criss gives the most daring of all nominated performances in this category, playing a serial killer that has just been plugged in differently than the others, but still plugged into the Reagan era's national Zeitgeist. But Legend confronts and improves his own impossible challenges as Jesus, a role that, in stage productions, often turns into beautiful boredom or is overshadowed and overtaken by the more dynamic character of Judas.
• Sandra Oh, Kill the day before
• Tatiana Maslany, Black Orphan
• Claire Foy, The crown
• Keri Russell, Americans
• Elisabeth Moss, The servant's tale
• Evan Rachel Wood, Westworld
The Emmy should … Keri Russellbecause she's been excellent but subtle throughout her stay Americans, and it's his last chance in the role.
L & # 39; Emmy will go to … Sandra Ohalthough she is much more likely, because she is just as impressive and because of the historical nature of her appointment.
• Pamela Adlon, Better things
• Rachel Brosnahan, The wonderful Mrs Maisel
• Allison Janney, Mom
• Issa Rae, Unsafe
• Tracee Ellis Ross, Blackish
• Lily Tomlin, Grace and Frankie
L & # 39; Emmy will go to … Rachel Brosnahan. I would be surprised if this is not the case.
The Emmy should go to … Rachel Brosnahan. I'd like to see a win for Ross or Adlon, who does such an ironic and endearing work on Better things. But I can not deny that it sounds like Brosnahan"s year.
• Jessica Biel, The fisherman
• Laura Dern, The tale
• Michelle Dockery, Impious
• Edie Falco, Law & Order True Crime: Menendez Murders
• Regina King, Seven seconds
• Sarah Paulson, American Horror Story: Cult
Emmy will go to … Michelle Dockery. She is a Brit who was on Downton Abbey, she is an excellent actress and she plays an American who plays arms in a western.
The Emmy should go to … Regina King. She's outdone herself here, who really says something. She has been so excellent for so long – recently on HBO Leftovers and three consecutive seasons of late ABC, lamented American crime – that fans have begun to wonder if it might be taken for granted. Seven seconds she herself has received mixed reviews and did not seem to make a big impression on culture at large, which is a shame. His already busy work by Barry Jenkins If Beale Street could speak however, should bring it back to the forefront of rewards discussions.
• Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, The iron Throne
• Mandy Patinkin, Country
• Matt Smith, The crown
• Peter Dinklage, The iron Throne
• David Harbor, Strange things
• Joseph Fiennes, The servant's tale
L & # 39; Emmy should go to … Mandy Patinkin. After a beginning of affection, the Academy seems to have gone far beyond the scope of the show, although it continues to name it in certain categories; but Patinkin is a shrewd pro who was at the top of his game this season.
L & # 39; Emmy will go to … David Harbor, because who does not like this character and this performance? As the character's name suggests, Hopper, there is a touch of Dennis Hopper's hard-alecky in the 1980s, but also the prominent magnetism that Harrison Ford brought to American cinema during the same decade. In addition, he acts in front of Eleven, which makes him even better.
• Louie Anderson, Baskets
• Alec Baldwin, Saturday Night Live
• Tituss Burgess, Kimmy Schmidt unbreakable
• Brian Tyree Henry, Atlanta
• Tony Shalhoub, The wonderful Mrs Maisel
• Kenan Thompson, Saturday Night Live
• Henry Winkler, Barry
The Emmy will go to … Henry Winkler. #JusticeforFonzie
The Emmy should go to … Henry Winkler. Again, #JusticeforFonzie.
• Jeff Daniels, Impious
• Brandon Victor Dixon, Jesus Christ Superstar in concert
• John Leguizamo, Waco
• Ricky Martin, The assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
• Edgar Ramirez, The assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
• Michael Stuhlbarg, The assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
• Finn Wittrock, The assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
L & # 39; Emmy will go to … Jeff Daniels. He plays one of the greatest Western villains in memory, a prairie snake with a hypnotic look. And the character's signature line – "It's not my death. I saw my death; it's not that "- is right there with Gene Hackman's latest line in unforgiven"I do not deserve to die that way. I was building a house.
The Emmy should go to … Brandon Victor Dixon. Almost everyone who has ever played Judas Jesus Christ Superstar killed in the role, in addition to allowing murder. Dixon is the most physically and musically musically rich musician who has ever sung the role, but he plays it with as much precision and strength.
• Lena Headey, The iron Throne
• Vanessa Kirby, The crown
• Millie Bobby Brown, Strange things
• Yvonne Strahovski, The servant's tale
• Ann Dowd, The servant's tale
• Alexis Bledel, The servant's tale
• Thandie Newton, Westworld
The Emmy should go to … Thandie Newton. There is not a single image of his performance on Westworld it is not at once impeccable and touching. And the extra-dramatic factor of being one of the most famous voices in the #MeToo movement could give voters one more reason to put their name on the ballot.
L & # 39; Emmy will go to … Ann Dowd.
• Zazie Beetz, Atlanta
• Alex Borstein, The wonderful Mrs Maisel
• Aidy Bryant, Saturday Night Live
• Betty Gilpin, GLOW
• Leslie Jones, Saturday Night Live
• Kate McKinnon, Saturday Night Live
• Laurie Metcalf, Roseanne
• Megan Mullally, Will & Grace
L & # 39; Emmy will go to … Kate McKinnon.
The Emmy should go to … Betty Gilpin. Because she took what could appear as a generic type of soap opera star, then gave it even more soul and depth than what is on the page. Even if she does not win this year, Gilpin will be back in 2019.
• Sara Bareilles, Jesus Christ Superstar in concert
• Penelope Cruz, The assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
• Judith Light, The assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
• Adina Porter, American Horror Story: Cult
• Merritt Wever, Impious
• Letitia Wright, Black mirror, "Black Museum"
The Emmy should go to … Letitia Wright. His human performance anchored a delicate episode of Black mirror this, even more than most others, threatened to turn into academic abstraction.
L & # 39; Emmy will go to Judith Light. She has been nominated several times in the Primetime Emmy category, won two Emmy Daytime Awards, and won the Tony Award for doing some of the best work of her career. The assassination of Gianni Versace, like Marilyn Miglin, the wife of a murdered real estate mogul with a secret life.
• The iron Throne, "Beyond the wall," Alan Taylor
• The iron Throne, "The dragon and the wolf", Jeremy Podeswa
• Ozark, "The toll", Jason Bateman
• Ozark, "Tonight, we improvise," Daniel Sackheim
• Stranger things, "Chapter Nine: The Door", The Duffer Brothers
• The crown, "Paterfamilias", Stephen Daldry
• The servant's tale, "After", Kari Skogland
L & # 39; Emmy will go to … Alan Taylor for "Beyond the Wall", because fucking.
The Emmy should go to … Kari Skogland, for an episode with images that owe as much to real world photojournalism as to dystopian science fiction.
• Atlanta, "Fubu", Donald Glover
• Atlanta, "Teddy Perkins", Hiro Murai
• Barry, "Chapter 1: Make your mark", Bill Hader
• The Big Bang Theory"The asymmetry of the bowtie", Mike Cendrowski
• LIGHT, "Pilot", Jesse Peretz
• The wonderful Mrs. Maisel, "Pilot", Amy Sherman-Palladino)
• Silicon Valley, "Original Part Offer", Mike Judge
The Emmy will go to … Hiro Murai. Without wishing to disrespect any of the other entries, I do not see how Murai for his direction of "Teddy Perkins", a television episode unlike any other this year.
The Emmy should go to … Hiro Murai.
• The assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, "The man who would be vogue", Ryan Murphy
• unholy, Scott Frank
• Jesus Christ Superstar in concert: David Leveax and Alex Rudzinski
• Paterno, Barry Levinson
• Patrick Melrose, Eric Berger
• Twin Peaks: the returnDavid Lynch
The Emmy should go to … David Lynch. Seriously. For "Episode Eight" alone. It's hard to imagine the TV Academy giving it to him, so I'm going to imagine Jesus Christ Superstar taking it – and the fact that it is a logically complex and visually stunning living production means that it has at least a chance.
Emmy will go to … Scott Frank. Again, just a feeling that Impious will be a strong competitor.
• Dave Chappelle: EquanimityStan Lathan
• Jerry Seinfeld: Jerry Before Seinfeld, Michael Bonfiglio
• Oscars, Glenn Weiss
• Steve Martin and Martin Short: An evening you will forget for the rest of your lifeMarcus Raboy
• Super Bowl LII half-time show starring Justin Timberlake, Hamish Hamilton
The Emmy will go to … The Oscars. (That's a weird sentence, is not it?)
The Emmy should go to … The Oscars. Honestly, and it surprises me as much as you, but I think it would be the right call. The ceremony has many flaws, the same as those that are repeated from year to year: it is swollen, it causes stains and some of the gags of the host – in this case Jimmy Kimmel – could be dropped. But it is an undeniably huge company, with strong pressure, and Weiss, who takes it back after 2017 Moonlight mix, inaugurated the beginning to the end as well as anyone could expect it.
• The iron Throne"The dragon and the wolf," David Benioff and D.B. Weiss
• Deadly vigil, "Nice Face", Phoebe Waller-Bridge
• Stranger things, "Chapter Nine: The Door", The Duffer Brothers
• Americans, "Start", Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg
• The crown, "Mysterious Man", Peter Morgan
• The servant's tale, "June", Bruce Miller
L & # 39; Emmy should go to … No more Americans or Kill the day before. The end or the beginning
L & # 39; Emmy will go to … Kill the day beforebecause Emmy's voters know the events of the industry meeting just how charismatic and hilarious Phoebe Waller-Bridge is (though they have never seen a picture of her excellent Amazon star vehicle). Fleabag) and will want to see her absolutely kill there on stage.
• Atlanta, "Alligator Man", Donald Glover
• Atlanta, "Barbershop", Stefani Robinson
• Barry, "Chapter 1: Make your mark", Alec Berg and Bill Hader
• Barry, "Chapter Seven: Strong, Fast and Continuous", Liz Sarnoff
• The wonderful Mrs. Maisel, "Pilot", Amy Sherman-Palladino
• Silicon Valley, "Fifty-one percent," Alec Berg
The Emmy will go to … Donald Glover. Atlanta and Barry seem to have the advantage even though Sherman-Palladino certainly has meaning with the words. That said, I'm inclined to think that the Emmy will go to Donald Glover for "Alligator Man," the first match of Atlanta Robbin 'Season and an episode that sheds light on the meaning of history and generational pressure.
The Emmy should go to … Liz Sarnoff. To be honest, I have no qualms about "Alligator Man". But just to mix things up, I would vote for Liz Sarnoff and "Chapter Seven" of Barry because it's the episode where Barry's actors and hitman finally collide. It magnificently synthesizes the themes of the show via a tense, free and carefully designed dialogue.
• American Vandal, "Clean Up", Kevin McManus and Matthew McManus
• The assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, "House on the Lake", Tom Rob Smith
• unholy, Scott Frank
• Patrick MelroseDavid Nichols
• Twin Peaks: the return, Mark Frost and David Lynch
• USS Callister, "Black Mirror", William Bridges and Charlie Brooker
The Emmy should go to … Mark Frost and David Lynch. Yes really. It's a travesty that the most original and striking drama television production of the last ten years (and perhaps the most memorable immediately) has not had more Emmy love, and it seems reasonable to assume that the best scenario proposal here is replacing braces, it could never get because it was just too strange. But we should not forget that these stunning scenes, images, and performances were meticulously written according to syllable and gesture.
Emmy will go to … Scott Frank. Just a feeling. If nothing else, Impiousis an excellent image-oriented rowing with that hard leather feel that you want out of a western, as well as the feminist text and the subtext that made it play as an act of glorified nostalgia.
• Full front with Samantha Bee Presents: the great American * Puerto Rico (* it's complicated)
• John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous at Radio City
• Michelle Wolf: Nice Lady
• Patton Oswalt: Annihilation
• Steve Martin and Martin Short: An evening you will forget for the rest of your life
L & # 39; Emmy will go to … Full Frontal With Samantha Bee Presents: The Great American * Puerto Rico. I also think voters will feel less guilty of voting for John Oliver in the category of exceptional variety series if they throw something like Bee.
L & # 39; Emmy should go to … It's really very difficult. I think Bee's Special has done a great service, as well as being fun. But this Emmy specifically concerns the quality of writing. On this metric, I have to give it to John Mulaney: Beautiful kid because he designed the kind of performance I could imagine reading and laughing as loud as I laughed when Mulaney uttered his words out loud.
