Serious storms and a tornado caused by remnants of Hurricane Florence killed at least one person near Richmond, Virginia, leaving a trail of destruction Monday. CBS affiliate, WTVR-TV, reports that a Chesterfield County warehouse has been reduced to ruins.
Chesterfield Fire and EMS spokesperson Lieutenant Jason Elmore confirms that there was a fatality in the collapse of the building. All other employees were taken into account and one of them was rushed to hospital with a minor injury.
WTVR says that several people have seen the tornado touching the ground and that the resulting damage has been documented online.
A dramatic video shows the tornado tearing the roof of a building.
According to the WTVR, residents reported significant damage in the Hampton Park area of Chesterfield County. They said that their roofs, siding and fallen trees were damaged.
"It was really calm. Then suddenly, we came here. We ran under cover, went to our windowless bathroom. A minute later, we came back and all the trees had fallen, "said a neighbor. . "It arrived in a minute."
Tornadoes are rare in Virginia, with an average of four in September. But as a result of Florence – which continues to move north and has killed at least 25 people – there have been 12 tornado warnings in the state in the last five days, compared to 11 during the entire high season of May and early June.
