A representative of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department was shot dead Monday after answering a call to Rancho Cordova.

"For the second time since a little over a year and the third time since I was sheriff, I have the unfortunate duty to inform you that we still have another officer killed in the exercise of his duties in Sacramento County, "Jones said at an early Monday evening press conference.

According to Sheriff Scott Jones, 27-year-old Deputy Minister Mark Stasyuk had been working for four and a half years. He leaves behind a wife, a mother, a father and a sister, said the sheriff's department.

Stasyuk and another MP responded to a service call around 1:44 pm employees at Pep Boys Auto Store, near Folsom Boulevard and McGregor Drive, according to Sheriff's Department spokesman Shaun Hampton.

When they arrived, a suspect fired on the deputies. MPs did not know the suspect was armed when they arrived, Jones said.

Stasyuk was shot in the upper body, said Jones. Second assistant Julie Robertson, 28, was shot in the arm. She should recover completely, Jones said.
