CHICAGO (AP) – Russell Wilson looked to his left and right. He looked for help in the middle of the field. He looked short and searched for deep balls.
Nobody was open.
It was that kind of Monday night for the Seattle Seahawks.
Wilson was surrounded for most of the Seattle 24-17s against the Chicago Bears, and his teammates helped him little until the fourth quarter. He was sacked six times for the second week in a row, including five in the first half, and made a mistake in the last game.
"We are still under construction," said coach Pete Carroll. "You can see how well our guys have played, see how they fought all the last seconds on the clock."
Seattle (0-2) played without goaltender D.J. Doug Baldwin, receiver and receiver, due to injuries, and Baldwin's absence was particularly notable. Tyler Lockett was the best receiver of the Seahawks with five catches for 60 yards, but he got most of his numbers in the fourth. Brandon Marshall struggled to open against one of his former teams.
"I can always do better," said Marshall. "I absolutely have to clean things up. I just have to be clearer in everything I do. We need to find a way to make games.
The hasty attack was also interrupted by Chicago's renewed defense, finishing with 74 yards on 22 carries. Seattle spent nearly 24 minutes of play time between tight games at one point.
Wilson started the fourth quarter with just 69 yards in 9-for-20, but he tried to rally the Seahawks.
"The fourth quarter showed us who we are and who we can be," Wilson said. "We just need to get a better start and try to figure out how to catch the fire we had in the fourth quarter, put it in first, second and third if we can do it, which I do not do not think far by all means. "
The Pro Bowler four times has helped Lockett win 20 yards and narrow winger Nathan Vannett, who won the 11th event to move Seattle into the Chicago area. He then threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Lockett to reduce the Bears' lead to 17-10 with 10:13 left.
Chicago (1-1) went three times and took the road that followed and returned to Seattle. But Wilson's pass to Rashaad Penny, near the midfield, was removed by Prince Amukamara, who made his first interception since 2015 for his first career touchdown with 6:37 to play.
"You can not even remember the last time Russ did that," Carroll said.
Wilson also lost a fumble on Seattle's next drive. He went to Will Dissly for a 2-yard touchdown with 14 seconds to go, but the Seahawks free kick was unsuccessful and the Bears missed the clock.
The mediocre performance of the Seattle offense resulted in a solid performance for his defense, led by two interceptions in the second quarter for Shaquill Griffin. The second-year cornerback did a good game on a ball thrown by Mitchell Trubisky, then had a dive on a ball.
Mychal Kendricks had one of two Seattle sacks in his first game since signing with the Seahawks on Friday. Kendricks pleaded guilty last week to insider hit charges, but he should not be sentenced in this case until January and the NFL has again imposed no discipline.
"The mere fact of having this opportunity to play means a lot more to me," said Kendricks, who was released by Cleveland on Aug. 29 after the charges were laid. "That being said, I intend to make the most of it."
It was not enough, not with the ineffective Seahawks offense.
Wilson was 22 years old for 36 for 226 yards. Penny was the top scorer with 10 carries for 30 yards while Seattle only had the ball 25 minutes and a half.
"The fighting mentality in me will always be there so that you can not play with fear," said Wilson. "You must be able to go there. I think we were still able to do it. We had a lot of returns in the fourth quarter and I think that will happen. "
