Celia Barquin Arozamena, a former NCAA golfer at Iowa State who won the Big 12 individual title in 2018, was found dead Monday morning at a golf course in Ames, Iowa. According to the Des Moines Register, the police accused Collin Daniel Richards, 22, of no unknown address, of first degree murder.
As reported by the Associated Press, police were called Monday morning at 10:20 am local time near the Coldwater Golf Course in Ames. Barquin Arozamena's body was found a short distance away. The police revealed little other details about the location of his body or the injuries sustained.
According to Story County's detainee's records, Richards is being held without bail after being jailed early Tuesday morning.
Twenty-two-year-old Barquin Arozamena exhausted her collegiate eligibility last season as she became the second Cyclones golfer to win medals at a conference tournament and qualify for the fourth consecutive year. She had returned to the state of Iowa to complete her degree in civil engineering.
"Celia had a contagious smile, a bubbly personality and anyone who was lucky enough to know her was blessed," Iowa state athletic director Jamie Pollard said Monday in a statement released by the school. "Our Cyclone family mourns the tragic loss of Celia, a spectacular student-athlete and ISU ambassador."
Wendy Wintersteen, president of the state of Iowa, said, "This is a tragic and senseless loss of a talented young woman and a recognized student athlete. "We are crying with her family and friends in Spain, her teammates here and all who knew her. On behalf of the entire Cyclone family, I extend my sincere condolences to Celia's family and her many friends and teammates in the state of Iowa. We are deeply saddened. "
Barquin Arozamena, from Puente San Miguel, Spain, also won the amateur women's European Championship in July, recording a 63-yard record at Penati Golf Resort of Slovakia in the third round.
"We are all devastated," said Iowa State women's golf coach Christie Martens. "Celia was a beautiful person who was loved by all of her teammates and friends. She loved the state of Iowa and was an outstanding representative of our school. We will never forget his dynamism to be the best and his passion for life. "
Richards has a long criminal history, according to newspaper articles and a criminal record check. After pleading guilty to first degree domestic violence in September 2015, he was sentenced to 60 days in prison and one year probation. In September 2016, he was charged with burglary, theft and criminal mischief in Bayard, Iowa. Richards pleaded guilty to burglary and theft in January 2017 and was sentenced to two years in prison and two years probation. That same month he was again sentenced to probation and suspended sentence after pleading guilty to first degree harassment. Richards was also scheduled to complete an anger management program.
