Elizabeth Smart said the imminent release of Wanda Barzee should concern the public because the convicted abductor is "still a great threat" and may hold beliefs that led to the kidnapping there is over 16 years old.

Barzee spent 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to helping Mitchell kidnap Smart in 2002. She was convicted of both state and federal crimes and transferred to Utah State Prison. in April 2016 after serving a federal sentence in Texas.
The pardon and parole board of Utah had denied early parole from Barzee following a hearing in June, which she had chosen not to attend. They also stated that she had refused to pass a psychological examination and set a release date in January 2024.
Barzee is expected to be released Wednesday after 15 years of detention because the Utah authorities had miscalculated the time that the woman was to serve.

Last week, however, the authorities announced that Barzee had served his sentence after counting the time spent in the federal prison. She should be released this week.
Smart recalled on Tuesday how Barzee encouraged Mitchell, who is serving a life sentence, to rape her.

Barzee's niece told The Deseret News that she was not going to see Barzee.
"She needs help," said the niece, adding that her family was not able to handle Barzee's psychological needs.
