MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD – Montgomery County Health, in October, will offer flu vaccines during a campaign to protect residents from the virus, which peaks in the fall and winter and can lead to serious illnesses, including including death.

Vaccinations will be available to residents through private health care providers as well as in retail outlets in the community. The clinics will start at the end of October and will continue in November.

Anyone wishing to avoid the flu should be vaccinated against the seasonal flu. Seniors, family members living with children under six months of age, health care workers, and those with chronic or weakened immune systems are recommended.

The best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated every year, but good health habits can often help stop the spread of germs and prevent diseases like the flu. Good health habits include:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing and before eating. An alcohol-based hand sanitizer (minimum 60% alcohol) will help if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching the eyes, nose or mouth. These are places where germs can easily enter the body.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people. When you are sick, stay away from others to protect them from illness.
  • Monitor yourself and your family for fever symptoms that include chills, headache, sore throat, cough, body aches, and vomiting or diarrhea.
  • If you are sick, stay at home without work, at school, or in other public places until you feel well.
