Humans are rarely infected and cases are rare in Georgia, said Ryan Cira, director of environmental health at DeKalb Health Board. However, 33% of people infected with EEE die and others suffer from major brain damage.

"It's a very serious disease if it infects a person," said Cira.

He also stated that the mosquito species known to carry IAS are mainly found in coastal wetlands.

Now that the virus has been identified in DeKalb, public health officials are reminding residents to remain vigilant to prevent the transmission of a disease without known treatment. This includes the elimination of stagnant water, reduction of the amount of skin exposed to the outside and the wearing of insect repellent at DEET.

A human case of West Nile virus has been reported in DeKalb this year. Across the state, there have been at least seven human cases, including one fatal.
