West Nile virus has been found in Culex mosquitoes in three other areas of Knox County, the Knox County Health Department reported Tuesday.

The mosquitoes in the Fairmont Boulevard neighborhood of North Knoxville, near West Emory Road and at West Hills, have been tested positive for the virus, which typically appears in Knox County in late summer and can infect horses and humans.

Weather permitting, the health unit will spray mosquitoes in these areas between 8:30 pm. and at 2 pm on Thursday and October 4 at Fairmont; and September 25th and October 9th at West Hills and West Emory Road. Residents are advised to stay indoors while spraying and keep the animals indoors or in the back yards.

Most people with West Nile virus, who are transported by Culex mosquitoes, have no symptoms, but about one in five infected people develop fever and other symptoms and about one in 150 people develop an illness. severe, sometimes fatal. .

The health service recommends the use of repellents containing DEET, picaridine, lemon eucalyptus oil, para-menthane-diol, 2-undecone or IR3535, and wearing socks. and long-sleeved shirts.

Also, empty any object on your property that could collect water – tires, cans, flowerpots and saucers underneath, pool covers, children's toys and garbage cans. The West Hills area includes Winston Road north of Interstate 40 to Corteland Drive; Corteland Drive between Bennington Drive and Chesterfield Drive; Chesterfield Drive between Bennington Drive and Corteland Drive; Bennington Drive east of Corteland Drive; Churchill Road; Sheffield Drive west of Kennon Road; Vanosdale Road; Shadycrest Drive; Westridge Drive; Kennon Park Lane; Portsmouth Road; Sutton Lane; Somerset Road; Manderly Way; West Hills Road between Stockton Drive and Sheffield Drive; and areas around West Hills Elementary School and YMCA Westside.
