The coach of Vernon Hills, Bellecomo, goes out with heart problems

The football coach of Vernon Hills, Bill Bellecomo, is in inescapable mode.

Must-live mode, actually.

"These doctors are excellent here," Bellecomo said Tuesday from his bed at Highland Park Hospital. "I told them," It's a game you can not lose. There is no option. I do not want to put pressure on you, but there is no room for error. ""

Bellecomo laughed, but he knows his medical situation is serious. The long-time coach of Vernon Hills has stated that he should have surgery on Thursday or Friday to replace a heart valve. Bellecomo, who is also the senior high school student, was laid off immediately and will be absent from work to recover by mid-December.

In his absence, assistant coach Jason Czarnecki will assume the position of head coach of the football team for the remainder of the season. The district is working to cover the dean of the responsibilities of Bellecomo's students with a long-term replacement.

He had been feeling slow for a while.

"It was typical flu symptoms, but the fever stayed with me," said Bellecomo, who is 48 years old. "It came and went."

Bellecomo missed a few tries, but did not miss a match this season. After practicing on Saturday, he learned the results of his blood tests, which revealed a bacteria in his blood. This sent him to the emergency immediately and started on what he called "really aggressive" antibiotics.

"When they started talking about the heart, it scared me," Bellecomo said.

He knows he has a long way to go but only wants to resume a normal life.

"(The doctor) said," In a year's time, it's going to be okay, "said Bellecomo." (After the surgery), it's going to be a cardiac rehab and just recovering my strength and stamina. The good news is that I'm 48, so I got it for me. "

"We wish Bill a speedy and complete recovery," said Prentiss Lea, Superintendent, District 128, Community High School. "We are looking forward to his return to the VHHS family when he is fully recovered."

Bellecomo is in its 20th year in District 128 and the 19th season in the VHHS football program. It's his sixth season as a head coach. Under his leadership, the Cougars were second in the 5A category in 2016.

Vernon Hills (2-2) will visit Highland Park on Friday night for its opening game of the North Division of the Central Suburban League.
