Cristiano Ronaldo has been sent off in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in his career. The incident occurred in the first half of the match between Juventus and Valencia, although it was not really an incident. Watch as Ronaldo does what appears to be an inadvertent contact with a Valencia defender, then mysteriously sees a red card.
Ronaldo and his teammates were, quite rightly, incredulous. And curiously, this decision was not taken by a new referee at the highest level of the competition, but by the crew of the German official Felix Brych, very experienced in the Bundesliga and Champions League.
The only explanation I can find is that one of Brych's assistants told him that Ronaldo intentionally hit Jeison Murillo in the face. But during the recovery, it is clear that any contact between Ronaldo's arm and Murillo's face was not only unintentional, but not particularly difficult either.
This is an inexplicable decision, and it would not be surprising if Brych or one of his assistants did not work for a while in the Champions League.
