There have been many crazy moments in the NFL on Sunday, but none of them has gone beyond what happened in Buffalo. At the half-time of the Bills' 31-20 defeat against the Chargers, Vontae Davis decided that he no longer wanted to play football, so he leave the team and removed in the middle of the game.
As you can imagine, Davis' decision did not really suit anyone in the organization. A teammate called him a dismissal, another teammate said it was "disrespectful". But Davis is not really interested in what they think.
After releasing a statement about his decision Sunday, the defender decided to go into details this week during a conversation with The Undefeated of ESPN.
During the interview, Davis stated that he was able to determine the time at which he made the decision: there was 47 seconds remaining in the first period, just after the Bills reduced their lead to 28-6.
"I went to the bench after this series and it hit me," Davis said. "I'm no longer part of this area."
For most of the first semester Davis had felt that something was wrong. "I did not feel well, I did not feel like me," he said.
Just before half-time, Davis went to John Butler, the Bills defenseman's coach, and told him, "I'm done."
Of course, Butler had no idea what was going on because he was trying to lead a match. However, two people knew exactly what was going on – the team chaplain and the director of player development at Bills – and they tried to dissuade him from his decision.
"I did not expect what they understand," Davis said. "This moment has shocked me too."
Although he was criticized for leaving his team in the middle of the game, the 30-year-old does not regret his decision.
"The start was therapeutic," said Davis. "I left everything the league wanted me to do, by playing for my injured teammates, the gladiator mentality, all of that jumped in. And when that broke out, I just wanted to leave everything behind. say: this experience was personal and was not meant to be understood by other people – it was me, the cold turkey, leaving an identity I had with me for so long.
Davis, who missed 11 games with an injury while he was with the Colts last season, felt it was time to talk about a career.
"My intention was not to hurt my teammates," Davis said. "At this moment, my intuition told me that I no longer belong to this area."
The former first-round pick will end his career after playing exactly one and a half games with the Bills. His short time with the Bills came after six seasons with the Colts (2012-17). Davis spent the first three seasons of his career in Miami after the Dolphins made him the 25th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.
