Fantasy football owners seem to be getting smarter every year. The leagues seem to become deeper. The competition seems to be better. This is partly because of the amount of information available to fantastic geeks ready to put time. But it's not always easy to find fantastic tips on players filling the background with fantastic depths.
It is here that we will try to fill in the gaps. Each week we will watch the Patriots game and try to help you decide which players to start and which ones to sit in – or invest in if you play in a daily format. But for now, Golladay and Jones have been productive enough to justify this week's debut as No. 3 WR / FLEX options, in my opinion.
Phillip Dorsett, WR, Patriots: I would have more Dorsett in the FLEX category, but I agree with him this week as well. He had a day against Jacksonville. . . but that's Jacksonville. I still believe – at least until Julian Edelman is back – Dorsett is no longer the catcher we saw against the Texans in the first week. Brady trusts him, and there should be room to throw him. The Lions are ranked 30th in the league for the authorized quarterfinals (117.7) and 28th in yards per attempt (8.6). It will be a big day for Brady and his seekers, and Dorsett should see enough to make it playable.
Kerryon Johnson / Theo Riddick, RB, Lions: Just like Golladay and Jones, I think you can rate these players the same way this week, and I think both are compatible with FLEX options. Johnson saw his game time percentage more than double last week, he saw six targets in the passing game, and he averaged more than five yards per run. It should only be occupied by time. Matthew Stafford, QB, Lions: I think Stafford will have a lot of attempts. And usually, volume leads to fantasy production. But this week, I think it's too easy to find 12 best fantasy quarterbacks. I would play Jimmy Garoppolo (in Kansas City), Matt Ryan (against New Orleans) and Carson Wentz (against Indy) against Stafford.
James White, RB, Patriots: White has been fantastic these first two weeks in PPR formats. He had 11 catches for 111 yards and one touchdown, and he cost you a maximum end-game choice. It is relatively cheap each week in daily format. But I would hesitate to play it here. I think the Patriots will play with a lead, and I think he may not see as many appearances as Sony Michel and Rex Burkhead. . .
Rex Burkhead / Sony Michel, RB, Patriots: . . . So why am I not ready to play Burkhead or Michel either? Too much uncertainty. Michel only played 13 times last week, but he had 10 carries and he saw two targets. It's great. He ran hard and even seemed healthy. Even better. But how does her workload change this week? I'm waiting for it to come up. But I would expect Burkhead's snaps to increase as well as it's farther from his concussion. I think there is enough talent in this area for the Patriots to want to have the top three choices, but that will give them all the fantastic puzzles. Champion of the classic Patriots. Hate to see it. Things could work out so that each member of this trio has more defined roles, but I would stay on the bench unless I'm desperate. White would be my best bet as FLEX if you are in a dead end.
LeGarrette Blount, RB, Lions: Blount looked better last week than he had done in an alarming week, forcing three missed tackles. But there is not much volume here. He played 30 times in two games. He injured the Patriots at the Super Bowl in February, he's a goal-line option and Matt Patricia likes it – all that is encouraging if you have it in fantasy. But I will not play it again this week. It makes Lions predictable and the Patriots should feast on this predictability. I also think Johnson is online for more work, and I think because the Lions will be behind, Blount could be sidelined.
