Every week, above our fantastic rankings, SI.com fantasy writer Michael Beller and 4for4 writer John Paulsen will briefly discuss some of the players they perceive differently. Scroll down for our full rankings at each position.
Michael Beller: Week 3 gives us an interesting list, John. Let's start running backwards, where you are much higher on James White than me (RB18 vs. RB26). Believe me, I love the player, and I am a badger as experienced as anyone who has spent four years (or more) in Madison, Wisc. He is a great real-life player and a key part of the New England offensive, but his production and opportunities can be difficult from week to week. This is not necessarily a bad fight for him, but as he has no value as a runner, he has to make the most of his seven or so targets to register as a fantasy starter. This is not a bet that I am comfortable doing.
At the reception, Kenny Golladay is ranked 19th, while you have it 27th. I'm in love with Golladay this season. It was just two games, but just pretend that someone from the future – let's call it 2018 New Year – came back a few months later and told us that Golladay was one of the stars of this year. The progress he made in the first two weeks of the season would be exactly what we expected from him with this future knowledge. Golden Tate and Marvin Jones will continue to do their job for a few weeks, but I do not think it's one of those weeks. Blake Bortles trimmed the Patriots last week and Matthew Stafford is essentially the luxury version of Bortles. This match has a total under 52, and while Lions are almost immune to home touchdowns, they still have an implied total of 22.75 points. I think Golladay gives us WR2 numbers and carries a WR1 cap this week.
What are you saying, John? Why am I wrong on White and Golladay?
John Paulsen: I hear what you are saying about White, but the RB2 rankings are slimmer than usual this week due to a combination of injuries, clashes and the Use of committees. untrustworthy. White is still a risky game, but his role has been important so far this year, as he has collected 17 targets in two games – nine in the first week and eight in the second week – which he played 11 receptions for 111 yards and landing. He basically fulfills the role of Julian Edelman in the offensive, so I think he's safer than he would normally be if Edelman were active and healthy. In two games, White is number 18 in the semifinals and the Patriots have a total of 29 points against the Lions. Although it has a floor below that of some of its RB2 counterparts, it also has a higher cap due to the nature of the offense in New England and the different ways in which it can score fantastic points.
With Golladay, I do not disagree with any of your points. As I make full projections, it's about determining the size of the pie and dividing the pie so that I feel comfortable where everyone is classified. I'm not ready to bail out Marvin Jones, so he needs to get a bigger piece of pie than he gets, and I've always been a big fan of Golden Tate, from a fantasy point of view, which leave Golladay in the front row. lower level than where he produced. Stafford can launch it and I would not be surprised at all if the Lions exceed their implied total. Golladay is a good game this week. I think all three Detroit receivers are.
