A sheriff fired at a Rite Aid distribution center in Aberdeen, Maryland on Thursday morning, killing several people and injuring others, the local sheriff said Thursday.
The only suspect in the shooting is in custody and has been hospitalized in critical condition, said Sheriff Jeffrey R. Gahler of Harford County. At a preliminary press briefing on the scene, he did not specify how many people had been killed, although The Associated Press and CNN reported that at least three people had died.
"None of the law enforcement officers fired on the scene," said the sheriff. "We do not believe that there is an additional threat."
According to Rite Aid spokeswoman Susan Henderson, Rite Aid employs nearly 1,000 people in the distribution center, where products are received from manufacturers and suppliers and processed for delivery to stores. The shooting occurred at the Liberty Support Facility on the campus of the distribution center.
Several victims were taken to the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, a hospital spokeswoman said.
According to the Sheriff's Office, Harford County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the scene at 9:09 am. Maryland State Police, F.B.I. and A.T.F. all participate in the answer.
The sheriff's office said on Twitter that there were "multiple victims", but did not disclose the number or their conditions.
"We are closely watching the shooting in Aberdeen" Governor Larry Hogan of Maryland said. "Our prayers are with all those who have been touched, including our first responders."
Aberdeen is just over 30 miles northeast of Baltimore.
