WASHINGON – More than 132,000 pounds of ground beef are recalled across Canada by Cargill Meat Solutions after an outbreak of E. Coli who killed a person and caused
The US Department of Agriculture said the recalled products bore a label "EST. 86R" inside the USDA inspection mark and that they were packed on June 21st.
On August 16, 2018, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) was informed of an investigation into diseases caused by E. coli O26. FSIS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the state's public health and agriculture partners determined that raw ground beef was the likely source of the reported diseases.
The epidemiological investigation has identified 17 diseases and one death with dates of onset of the disease from July 5 to July 25, 2018.
Cargill Meat Solutions' ground beef products were identified as a result of additional investigations related to Recall 072-2018, August 30, 2018, where ground beef products were recalled as part of Epidemic E coli O26. FSIS traceability data indicated that patients had consumed ground beef products purchased from various retail stores provided by Cargill Meat Solutions.
E. coli is a life-threatening bacterium that can lead to dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps. Symptoms usually occur two to eight days after exposure.
Some diseases last longer and may be more serious. The infection is usually diagnosed by testing a stool sample. Most people recover within a week, but some develop a more serious infection.
FSIS is concerned that some products may be frozen and in consumer freezers. Those who have purchased these products are advised not to consume them. People are welcome to throw these items or return them to their place of purchase.
