More than 132,000 pounds of ground beef probably contaminated with E. coli were recalled Wednesday after the death of one person and 17 sick people.
The ground beef, which authorities said came from "part of the carcass", was produced on June 21 and shipped nationwide by Colorado giant food giant, Cargill Meat Solutions, announced the US Department of Agriculture.
The USDA was concerned that the meat was still in the freezers of some people and urged anyone who bought it to throw it away or return it.
The ministry has published a list of affected products and their labels. All the meat had an "EST 86R" inside the USDA inspection mark.
Death and 17 diseases associated with ground beef were reported between July 5 and July 25. The USDA has not indicated where the affected people lived.
The CDC and other agencies were investigating reports from E. Coli 026 and determined that ground beef was the source of the infections, the USDA said in the release.
The FDA was investigating a separate recall of ground beef from Publix Super Markets in Florida in August and determined that people who ate ground beef "bought from various retail stores provided by Cargill Meat Solutions" type of E. coli.
E. coli 026 is a less common type of bacterium and infected people may suffer from it and suffer from bloody diarrhea and vomiting that can sometimes "last longer and be more severe," according to the department.
People infected with E. coli often feel sick two to eight days after having eaten.
