Cleveland Browns Halftime Scribbles: Baker Mayfield is a spark late in the first half – Terry Pluto

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Squiggle in my half-time notebook while the New York Jets led Browns, 14-3:

1. The Browns are supposed to be a running team with Carlos Hyde and rookie Nick Chubb as bullish supporters. But Todd Haley seems to like trying to deceive the other team. In the first 11 games for the Browns in attack, seven were passes (an achievement). Three were run by quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

2. So, 10 of the 11 games to open the game were Taylor trying to run or pass. Why? The race lasted 4 yards by Hyde. Taylor did not have time to get started.

3. One of the best parts of the game was early in the first quarter when Browns rookie cornerback Denzel Ward read a bad pass and faced Chris Herndon for an 8-yard loss.

4. John Dorsey has always had special teams ranked in the top 10 over the past four years with the Kansas City Chiefs. The new general manager of the Browns must be frustrated to watch the Browns this season.

5. Britton Colquitt blocked a ball kick, giving the Jets the ball on the Cleveland 28. This triggered a touchdown from New York. It was the first time since 2013 that the Jets blocked a kick.

6. Ten quarter-finals of the 2018 season, the Browns have already blocked a post and a goal on the field. Special teams have been reported twice for penalties on hen returns.

7. The Browns gave a second TD in the first half. To make it even more frustrating, they were both scarred by ex-Brown Isaiah Crowell. He was accused of taunting after a 2-yard run for his second TD.

7. Crowell ran for as many TDs (two) in the first half of this game as he did all of last season for the Browns. Crowell was out of class when he took the balloon and used it as toilet paper and shot the crowd after scoring the second time.

8. Taylor had a terrible first half – 4 of 14 for 19 yards. He was fired three times, knocked down several times. He also seemed to take several hard shots. He left the field late in the first period to suffer a concussion.

9. When the Browns played the ball with Hyde, he had 47 yards in seven races.

10. Baker Mayfield relieved Taylor and was 3-for-4 for 47 yards. He connected on 14 and 16 yard passes to Jarvis Landry. His release was swift, his arm strong. He also found tight winger David Njoku for 17 yards.

11. Rookie Greg Joseph made a 46-yard field goal, which was a plus for the special teams. His coup de send was exceeded. At least he made a goal in the field.
