Seven people were shot dead in Syracuse, New York: reports

(Reuters) – Up to seven people, including children, were shot dead in Syracuse, New York on Thursday, the firefighters union said on social media.

Police responded to a shooting shortly after 9 pm local time and found several people injured by gunshots, said the department in a statement posted on Twitter by a producer of national public radio.

The police did not reveal how many people had been shot or the extent of their injuries.

The Syracuse Fire Brigade reported seven victims of shooting on Midland Avenue in the city, according to a Facebook post.

The news website Syracuse.com reported that the shooting took place during a family reunion to mark the death of a person who died of cancer on Thursday morning.

The website indicated that ambulances were seen leaving with a police escort around 9:15 pm.

The website said that at least 10 shots had been fired in the shootout in downtown Syracuse, about 402 km northwest of New York.
