Brie Larson beats Captain Marvel "Smile" Trolls with MCU Photoshops

While there was a lot to collect from the first Captain Marvel trailer, some viewers were curiously obsessed with the lack of smile of the main actress Brie Larson. The Oscar winner herself has responded to sexist comments online about it, using fan-like images mocking the problem with photoshoot smiles on Marvel's male superheroes.

The tone of the trailer, widely seen, was very serious, the character of Larson, Carol Danvers, seeming to undergo several tests and difficulties. The trailer contains images of Danvers falling repeatedly in his life, followed by shots of his standing position. We see Danvers as a prominent member of the Starforce military group, and the final shot of her in the trailer is a showcase of her power. Said as the strongest figure of the MCU, the trailer clearly shows viewers that Danvers is a determined woman.

But online trolls could not help but return to the most basic and misogynistic comments, wondering why Larson as Captain Marvel rarely smiled throughout the two-minute trailer. Online comments, probably from male commentators, felt that the trailer was missing for this very reason. Such tweet from a Twitter troll attracted enough attention and criticism to highlight the "problem", manipulating the trailer footage to make it appear as if Larson smiled.

As one can guess, many others have taken Twitter to criticize this so-called "correction". Some came to the defense of the tweet, trying to argue that the lack of smile, for whatever reason, showed that Larson was not "charismatic enough" to star in a superhero movie, or lack of lightness or humor. But basically, most MCU fans have seen the critics and the tweet that portrayed him as misogynistic. Another A Twitter user named Jane Ritt satirized the tweet presenting his own manipulated images, this time with Tony Stark, Steve Rogers and Stephen Strange "smiling". Brie Larson herself then shared these pictures on her Instagram story.

Although Larson's answer is amusing to a certain extent, this brief saga highlights a form of occasional misogyny still old. Some men expect women to smile and be "pretty" to adapt to their personal image of what women "should" look like, in an offensive and dehumanizing way. If women like Larson do not meet the standards of these men, they are judged and criticized. Larson being a women's rights activist – as she has publicly shown after handing out a trophy to accused Casey Affleck – it's no wonder she's responding to this widespread criticism. While Captain Marvel is becoming the first Marvel Studios film to feature a female solo superhero, the company has a long way to go before rampant sexism such as this one is canceled. At the very least, Larson managed to push him back in his own way.
