SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) – Syracuse police are investigating a shootout that injured five people, including an eight-year-old girl.

Gunshots rang out in the 1300 block of Midland Avenue on Thursday night, just after 9pm.

Police said the shots came from across the street, hitting the lawn where the victims were gathering.

Family members say dozens of people have gathered for an event in the honor of a dead man.

The five victims were transported to the University Hospital of Upstate.

Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler says the victims are stable and are supposed to survive.

The names and age of the wounded have not yet been communicated.

Nearly half an hour after filming Midland Avenue, and just one block away, a 14-year-old girl was hit by a bullet in Furman Street. It should be fine.

Investigators say it's not clear at this point if shots are related.

Individuals with information about one or the other incident are asked to call 315-442-5222.

NewsChannel 9 and LocalSYR.com will have updates as they become available.
