75-year-old volunteer visits animal shelter every day and naps with cats

A man from Wisconsin turned drowsiness into a charitable act.

Terry Lauerman, 75, visits his animal shelter in Green Bay every day and naps with his cats.

Although it is not quite his intention.

According to Elizabeth Feldhausen, the founder of the Safe Haven Pet Sanctuary, Lauerman walked around the shelter about six months ago with a simple dream and a cat brush.

"He just walked in and started brushing his teeth," Feldhausen told HuffPost Thursday, noting that he never asked to be a volunteer. "So, finally, we told him that he was an official volunteer and asked him to fill out our volunteer form."

Mr Feldhausen said Mr Lauerman was visiting the cage-less sanctuary – which rescues disabled cats who could be euthanized in other establishments – every day and would stay for about three hours.

After treating a cat a little, he usually dozes off.

"[He sleeps for] about an hour, then he will wake up and change his cat, "said Feldhausen.

Apparently, Lauerman greatly enjoys the unpaid concert – especially the salient aspect.

"He said, [the brushing is] an experience as great as it is for him, "said Feldhausen.

Naturally, the volunteer who used to accidentally faint the staff seduced the staff of Safe Haven and the group decided to devote a publication on Facebook Tuesday.

"We are very lucky to have a human being like Terry," wrote the shelter, as well as some pictures of Lauerman cats napping with felines. "Terry came a day and came forward. He said he would like to brush cats. Finally, it became everyday. He brushes all the cats and can talk to you about all their likes and dislikes. He also accidentally falls asleep most of the time. That does not bother us – cats need it! Terry is a wonderful volunteer.

The shelter staff is not the only one to have been hit by Lauerman. As of Thursday afternoon, the post has received more than 1.6 million on Facebook. He also made his way to Reddit, where he received hundreds of comments.

And although Lauerman hopes that his 15 minutes of fame will lead to more donations to Safe Haven, he also wants to remind people that he is not the only one to spend his time in the shelter.

Feldhausen said Lauerman specifically congratulated another volunteer named Paula.

"Who does he consider the cat grandmother," said Feldhausen. "He wants to make sure that people who do what he does everyday also get a credit."
