For the second year in a row, the life expectancy of Americans has decreased.
According to the latest report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, the total life expectancy in the United States was 78.6 years, down 1% from the previous year. Men can expect to live 76.1 years, compared to 76.3 years ago. Women remained stable at 81.1 years.
During the 20th century, advances in medicines and other treatments led to a dramatic increase in the life span of people. But deaths from drug overdose, chronic liver disease, suicide, Alzheimer's disease, and bloodstream infections (sepsis) all increased, resulting in a shorter average life span.

Heart disease and cancer continue to kill most Americans, but that's not why people are dying younger. In fact, deaths from heart disease have decreased. Between 2006 and 2016, however, overdose mortality rates increased by 72% and for suicides by 23%.

So who lives longer? According to the report, Hispanics had the highest life expectancy at 81.8 years. Non-Hispanic whites were 78.5, followed by non-Hispanic blacks at 74.8.
Wherever you live can also affect how long you can expect to live.
Areas in the bottom 25% of the report had four points in common: most people were less educated, low-income and predominantly black, and they were in the South.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, who worked with the CDC on the report, created a calculator to determine the life expectancy of a region.
Where you live in Atlanta affects life expectancy
The average life of Georgians, according to the calculator, was 77.40 years. If you live in Gwinnett County, however, you get 3.18 extra years. The inhabitants of Cobb County are 80.08 years on Earth, but those in DeKalb County receive only 79.14 years.
The region with the lowest life expectancy in the United States was Stilwell, Oklahoma, where the population averaged 56.3 years. Where do people live the longest? Chatham, North Carolina. Residents of this high-income area could expect to be present until the age of 97.5 years.
