UFC welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley, must be operated on the injured thumb of his right hand. Ariel Helwani of ESPN revealed Friday. Woodley (19-3-1) apparently suffered the injury in the first round of his successful UFC 228 title defense against No. 1 contender Darren Till. After the procedure, Woodley will need 8 to 12 weeks to recover.
While the news of the injury is certainly overwhelming for Woodley, who had just returned to the Octagon after a long recovery from a shoulder operation, it also inflicts a huge blow on the UFC in the one of his milestones of the year. . UFC 230 November 3 at Madison Square Garden still needs a major event, and many expected Woodley to step in and defend his title against former interim champion Colby Covington. Clearly, the recovery schedule revealed for Woodley immediately puts an end to any plan that might have been put in place to ensure that this fight against the MSG headliner.
Now, with the news of this unfortunate injury on Friday, we will probably not see Woodley defend his welterweight crown until 2019.
