ATHENS, Greece (AP) – This is not quite the World Wide Web – but Aitoliko spiders in Greece have made a good start.
Encouraged by an explosion of insect populations that they eat, thousands of small spiders in the western Greek city have covered thick trees with coastal trees, bushes and low vegetation.
The white and sticky lines extend for a few hundred meters along the coastline of Aitoliko, built on an artificial island in a salt lagoon near Missolonghi, 250 kilometers to the west. ;Athens.
Experts told local media that the number of lake flies, a non-biting midge, had exploded in late summer wet conditions. Spiders, who love flies, have reproduced quickly to fully enjoy the party.
Residents say that extensive spider webs have another benefit: to prevent mosquitoes from feeding themselves.
