CHICAGO – The Chicago Department of Public Health is investigating two confirmed cases of legionellosis in two people who have stayed at the Embassy Suites hotel in downtown Chicago.
"At present, it is unclear whether the Embassy Suites (located at 600 North State Street) was the source of the bacteria that caused the disease of both people," said Friday the CRPD in a statement.
Health officials are testing samples of the hotel.
"The hotel management cooperates fully with the investigation. There is no immediate risk to the public, "the statement said.
The hotel issued a statement saying:
Our primary concern is always the safety and well-being of our guests and employees … We work closely with the city and take all appropriate measures as directed by the Division of Disease Control.
The hotel has closed all the water points during the tests and a complete disinfection is in progress.
Legionnaires' disease is caused by aqueous bacteria inhaled by steam. Symptoms often begin two to ten days after exposure and include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, muscle aches, fever and chills.
