Cargill ground beef E. coli outbreak
By the staff
On Sept. 19, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA FSIS) Food Inspection and Food Safety Service announced that Cargill Meat Solutions, a Fort Morgan (CO) company, may be contaminated with Shiga toxins Escherichia coli O26 bacteria.
The recall was requested after FSIS received multiple notification E. coli diseases. FSIS, in collaboration with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other public health officials, has determined that raw ground beef is the likely source of these diseases. To date, the CDC reports that an epidemiological survey identified 18 diseases in four states, six hospitalizations and one death. The dates of onset of the disease range from July 5th to July 25th, 2018. Now, the CDC says that the outbreak appears to be over.
Cargill's beef products were implicated as a result of the investigation into a similar recall, issued in August, regarding ground beef sold in Publix stores. FSIS traceability data indicated that patients consumed ground beef products purchased from various Cargill retail stores.
The products in question were produced and packaged on June 21, 2018 and have an "EST". 86R "printed near the USDA inspection mark. These items have been shipped to retail outlets across the country. See the full list of products recalled here. FSIS is concerned that some products may be frozen and in consumer freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are advised not to consume them. These products must be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.
Consumers who have questions about the Cargill recall may call 1-844-419-1574 for assistance.
