Robert Redford admits that he should never have said that he is retiring

Robert Redford regrets to say that he is retiring from Hollywood.

"I think it was a mistake to say that I was retiring because you never know," said the iconic actor at PEOPLE at the New York premiere of The old man and the gun Thursday.

"It was like it was time to focus on another category."

The 82-year-old admitted that he should never have said that his latest film would be FOX Searchlight's next crime comedy.

"I should not have said that because it diverts the attention of the film."

In August, the actor said Weekly entertainment that he would retire after packing the production on the film.

"Never say never, but I rather concluded that was the case for me, and [I’ll] after retirement, because I've been doing it since I was 21, "explained Redford. EW.

"I thought," Well, that's enough. "And why not come out with something very optimistic and positive?"
