Anthony Joshua – arguably the biggest active star in world boxing – has faced his latest test, a WBA, WBO and IBF world title against the Russian Alexander Povetkin in front of 80,000 fans at Wembley Stadium.
Joshua successfully defended his belt with a 7th round TKO. USA TODAY 'HUI Sports' Martin Rogers broke the round by round:
ROUND SEVEN
Joshua starts the seventh round with a more offensive goal and it weighs on Povetkin. Halfway, he climbs another train and throws shots. Povetkin is going down! The Russian makes his way with heart and courage, but he falters. Joshua moves in to kill. Another barrage follows and the referee jumps, just as the challenger is about to fall back onto the canvas. Anthony Joshua wins by TKO 7 and retains his belt and reinforces his reputation as the worst heavyweight on the planet.
SIX ROUND
Povetkin begins to run out of steam and Joshua has barely had to leave the second report to win the title. It's not spectacular, but Joshua shows how much he has to beat. His accuracy is not perfect tonight, but he has it but he is installed now and is trying to assert himself more. Round of AJ on my card, making it 57-57 on my card.
FIVE ROUND
Anthony Joshua should be able to see the right side of Povetkin coming, he is long and slow and he telegraphs that it happens. Even so, a few have escaped, maybe just enough to get the trick out. 48-47 to Povetkin after five on my card, but it seems that Joshua is ready to take control, just in the meantime.
ROUND FOUR
Joshua's feet began to come to life, freeing themselves from danger with increased ease. English commentators were very excited about a cut in Povetkin's left eye, but this was caused by an accidental collision with the head and did not seem to hinder Povektin's vision.
THREE THREE
Another slow start for Joshua but he came back slightly. The two fighters fought to land but Povetkin went too far in his shell and probably paid for it on the dashboard. R3 to AJ. 29-28 in Povetkin on my map.
SECOND ROUND
Joshua's nose was bloody as he came out of the corner and he did not look comfortable. The challenger seemed encouraged by the sight and held another solid round. Joshua has trouble connecting with his close-ups, even his jab with a real frequency. Want an indicator of how this is going? The crowd is almost silent. 20-18 in Povetkin after two on my map.
ROUND ONE
Povetkin looked intense in the walk-in, Joshua relaxed as his elaborate ring unfolded. A first round was followed. Joshua controlled the game for the most part, but a late burst of Povetkin saw Russia connect with three punches and let the Brit momentarily bother before the bell rang. 10-9 Povetkin after one.
Pre-fight
The atmosphere is being built at Wembley. Sorry Las Vegas, but there is no better place in the world for a great fighting atmosphere than this football stadium on the outskirts of the British capital. It's cold, rainy and miserable outside, and the fans here do not care much. A level of noise and passion for football style is to be expected. Will Joshua react and feel the pressure for a knockout? The victory will prevent him from meeting the winner of Deontay Wilder v. Tyson Fury next year and become the boxing man of the moment.
