A campaign sign for Rep. Josh Gottheimer and the home of one of his supporters was disfigured with swastikas, blasphemies and racial epithets in Hampton Township, NB, early Saturday morning .
The sign, a large banner, was disfigured by anti-Semitic and racist statements written in black paint. "Vote MAGA, the Libs are void. Go to CALI Dems, "was scribbled on the other side of the sign, which supported the reelection of Mr. Gottheimer, a Democrat.
The house was also vandalized with a large swastika painted on the garage door. Bright yellow signs from real estate broker Weichert on an adjacent property were also vandalized with swastikas and male genitals, as well as a nearby road sign.
"We were first alerted by a text from our neighbor," said Adam Stolarsky, 48, who lives in the house with his girlfriend, Colleen Murch.
He said he set up the campaign sign for the first time on Sunday and then dropped it two days later. He also said that there were handprints everywhere in the garage.
Sgt. Jeff Flynn, a New Jersey State Police Information Officer, confirmed that the soldiers were investigating.
Mr. Gottheimer, who is Jewish, has already been confronted with anti-Semitism during campaigns. During his 2016 campaign, a leaflet depicting him with devil's horns and a goatee, surrounded by Gothic letters. Republican and Democratic campaigns have decried it as anti-Semitic.
In 2017, he wrote an article in The Record of North Jersey with Senator Cory Booker, titled "Anti-Semitism Has No Place in New Jersey," after the Destruction of a Jewish Symbol called eruv in several cities of the state. Antisemitic graffiti was found on the Diner Airport at Wantage.
"There is no room for white supremacists or anti-Semitism in our larger community, and this hate-motivated crime certainly does not reflect the values of the people of Sussex County," he says. Mr. Gottheimer. McCann, a Republican, said in a statement Saturday. He expressed gratitude for the rapid response of the state police.
In a statement, McCann said that "antisemitic actions in Sussex County are odious" and that "racism has no place in our policies, in our state or in our country".
Racist graffiti comes a few days after the registration of sheriff of the most populous county in the state make racist remarks about Blacks and Sikhs.
Hampton Township, a small town in the northwestern part of Sussex County, is about 95% white, according to census figures.
Mr Stolarsky said that he had already put up a new sign.
"If we did not put it back quickly, the fools would win," he said.
