Senate leadership at the GOP has hardened its determination to move forward with the appointment of Brett Kavanaugh following the New Yorker report last night, by several GOP officials and collaborators.
While Republican advisers acknowledge that Christine Blasey Ford's sexual assault charges and the imminent hearing against them have left Kavanaugh's candidacy pending, the latest allegations "have made people angry," a senior manager at CNN.
The official pointed out this morning the strong statements of Senses Tom Cotton and Lindsey Graham, and said that the Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, would reiterate his support for the nomination this afternoon.
- Cotton, in a statement, blamed the Democrats for these stories – and called it "character assassination."
- Graham, a prominent member of the Judiciary Committee, called the allegations of the assassination of wholesale characters.
The statements echo what has become a thumping drum of public and private messages from outside conservative and popular groups to advance the allegations.
What to watch now: The key to everything is the counting of votes – and that means the leaders are keeping a close eye on Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, as well as Senator Jeff Flake, a member of the Judiciary Committee, to see what their reactions will be as a result of the last allegation, officials and aides said.
