It seemed that Trevor Lawrence was not going to be the starting quarterback of Clemson, and it seems the time has come. Clemson announced Monday that Lawrence, a five-star freshman, would be starting quarterback against Syracuse this week.
The news does not come as much of a surprise after seeing Lawrence receive the majority of shots during Clemson's 49-21 win over Georgia Tech last weekend. Lawrence started 18 assists for Kelly Bryant's 10, and was much more efficient with his attempts to roll four touchdowns and an average of 9.8 yards per attempt. Both shared time for the Tigers all season, and although neither of them played badly, Lawrence was the best of both.
He threw nine touchdowns to just two interceptions while averaging 10 yards per attempt. Bryant has a higher completion percentage (66.7 to 65) but has only two touchdown passes and one interception. Lawrence's smugglers' efficiency rating is 191.83 Bryant dwarf mark points of 146.90. Although Bryant was the best fighter of the two, the advantage was not enough to keep the starting position in the eyes of Clemson coaches.
Now, what is not clear at this point is whether Bryant will always see the time during the matches. We do not know if Lawrence took the job for himself, or if we see a situation like that of Alabama where Tua Tagovailoa gets the majority of the shots, but Jalen Hurts continues to see the weather as well.
