Baker Mayfield Named Choke for Cleveland Browns

After an announcement since their first victory in more than a year, the Cleveland Browns have officially announced that rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield will leave Sunday against the Oakland Raiders.

Browns coach Hue Jackson announced Monday that Mayfield was the team's starter after testing and had the chance to meet veteran Tyrod Taylor.

"He is the starting quarterback of this football team," Jackson said. "We know it's a long season, all kinds of things can come in. Baker Mayfield is the starting quarterback of this team."

Jackson said he told Mayfield that he had the opportunity to start his performance. Mayfield had a big smile on his face telling himself that he was getting the job, Jackson said.

Mayfield said it was more rewarding to have had to win the starting role.

"You want to work for it, you have to win it," said the rookie quarterback on Monday. "… success is so much more fun when you have to work for it."

Taylor was injured in Thursday night's game against the New York Jets and was replaced by Mayfield, who helped the Browns clear a 14-point deficit and record their first win since December 24, 2016.

"There was nothing I saw that he was not ready to handle," Jackson said. "He checked each box for me.

"… it was earlier than when I thought it would happen, because I thought we were playing much better early in attack and we did not do it.

Mayfield will be the 30th starting quarterback of the Browns since they took over the game in 1999, the most by an NFL team at that time. Cleveland made an appearance in the playoffs, in 2002, in this period.

Taylor will be the reserve quarterback for Sunday's game if he is healthy, Jackson said. Taylor was supposed to clear the concussion protocol this week, sources told Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Pat McManamon of ESPN contributed to this report.
