A Florida man who stopped to help a car in distress was then beaten and killed while returning to his own vehicle, which was later stolen by the person who struck him. , the authorities said.

Dhimitri Andoni, 22, stopped his 2015 Hyundai on the Interstate 275 side in St. Petersburg after noticing another car on the highway, said Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Steve Gaskins.

According to a police report obtained by NBC News, Andoni helped people from the other car, who left. As he returned to his own car, however, he was fatally hit by a 1996 Ford F-150, according to authorities.

The man who would drive this car, 30-year-old Dana Thomas Byrd, came out and saw that Andoni had been killed, police reports. Byrd allegedly stole the Hyundai, abandoning his own truck. Andoni's body was left on the side of the highway.

"Byrd's stopped after the impact," Gaskins told the Washington Post. [Andoni is] dead, get in his car and leave. It could not be stranger than that. "

Andoni was found only on Friday afternoon, after his father reported the disappearance of his son.

Byrd was arrested Friday and charged with leaving an accident involving the death and theft of a motor vehicle, according to Pinellas County Sheriff's Office records. He is held with a deposit of $ 105,000. He has not yet pleaded.
